Have you heard the buzz?

“Asthma Blues” brings new power to the core messages we need to deliver to ALL children and youths with asthma. Through “Asthma Blues”, Al Keith has provided an exciting new media for raising asthma literacy in America. His music brings fun and greater effectiveness to asthma education.
I believe we are far more likely to change behavior and promote appropriate self-care actions among kids and adults by adding “Asthma Blues” to our "educator toolkit".

“While asthma is very much a disease of inflammation, its successful management is very much a matter of communication. Al Keith and CTK provide a remarkably relevant tool kit to foster effective asthma education in an age-appropriate and culturally relevant manner. This tool kit is aimed at our most vulnerable patients...the young children who suffer so much from a disease poorly understood and therefore, poorly managed.”

“Asthma Blues" is fun & educational for children of all ages. The catchy tunes with the medical terms makes learning easy to grasp. Who knew learning something health related could be such fun? Even children that don't have asthma could benefit from the "Asthma Blues" program as it teaches them why their friend might have restrictions and limitations. "Asthma Blues" is a well thought out program and should be taught in every school.”

The ALANY purchased "Asthma Blues" to be used during the SuperKids Summer Experience (SSE) program. The SSE was intended to run for the month of July for children with asthma ages 6-11. The curriculum consisted of a weekly asthma topic and a series of hands on activities for the children to engage in to reinforce the message. The "Asthma Blues" music CD was intended to be used in addition to the arts and crafts to assist the children in a creative expression of asthma self-management skills.

During the fall and winter of 2009, older adult residents of the District of Columbia received asthma self-management education using the Managing Asthma Effectively in Older Adults curriculum.  Music from the CD titled “Asthma Blues” played as participants entered the room to begin the session. Participants did not comment on the lyrics, but seemed to enjoy the music, with several bopping their heads to the beat as they found their seat.  We hope to incorporate the CD in future educational sessions and will certainly provide you with feedback.
